Food & Drink

This community potluck picnic is free and open to the public. You can bring food for just yourself, or in the spirit of Common Picnic, you can bring enough food to share potluck-style. I'll be bringing plates, cups, utensils, and napkins... and something yummy for dessert! You are not allowed to bring alcohol onto the island (but I've never seen them check bags). There are also food trucks on the island that sell food and alcohol.

Other things to Bring

  • Sunscreen, sunglasses
  • Hat or umbrella, if you're really sensitive to the sun
  • Tablecloth or picnic blanket
  • Games, beach balls, hula hoops, frisbees, etc.
  • Friends, kids... but the island doesn't allow pets

Getting There

FERRY FROM MANHATTAN The Governors Island ferry departs from the Battery Maritime Building located at 10 South Street, adjacent to the Staten Island Ferry in Lower Manhattan. By Subway: 1 to South Ferry station • 4, 5 to Bowling Green station • R to Whitehall St. station By Bus: M9 • M15

FERRY FROM BROOKLYN (Weekends ONLY) The Governors Island Brooklyn ferry departs from Pier 6 in Brooklyn Bridge Park, at the foot of Atlantic Avenue. The ferry terminal is accessible as follows: By Subway: R to Court Street • 4, 5, 2, 3 to Borough Hall By Bus: B63

There is no charge for ferries before noon on weekends. Bicycles are welcome on the ferry at no additional cost. The ferry lines from Manhattan have been pretty long this year, especially in the afternoon, so you might want to show up at least 30 min prior to your desired ferry departure time.

Other Activities on Governors Island

There are lots of other fun activities on Governors Island to check out before or after the picnic, including the NYC Poetry Festival and a jewelry making workshop. And as always, the island offers miles of car free biking. You can bring your own bike or rent one from Blazing Saddles in Colonels Row. Feel free to contact me by email if you have any other questions. I can't wait to picnic with you all!!
